Thomas Sunderland from Southwell, Notts enlisted at Sheffield in 1866 as a boy soldier with the 45th regiment & served with the regiment until 1891. He was awarded the Afghanistan medal 1878-79-80 & went on to be awarded his LS&GC in 1886.
