The recipient was born in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire & enlisted 12-6-1883 age 19. He served with the Royal Marine battalion in Egypt from 16-9-1884 to 29-5-1885. His medal was issued to him in August 1886 whilst serving onboard HMS Orontes.

NEF & complete with medal roll & service details which confirm all three clasps. Page 41 of the medal roll states he was also entitled to the Suakin 1884 clasp put page 99 states he was not entitled to the Suakin 1884 clasp.

John Joseph Shank was born in Tipton, Staffordshire on the 10th of February 1888 & joined the Royal Navy as a boy in 1903. During WW1 he served onboard HMS Falmouth from 2-7-1914 to
26-8-1916 & as such he was onboard when it was sunk by German submarines off Flamborough Head 19-8-1916. He survived the sinking and spent most of the rest of the war at HMS Dolphin.He joined the RFR in 1919 & was discharged in 1930.
