John.A.Cross from Sheffield first landed in France 15-4-1915 serving with the 3rd West Riding Brigade R.F.A with service number 194 and was later issued with the six figure TF service number 203495. He was awarded the MM for services in France in the London gazette 29-8-1918 and this was followed by the award of the DCM in the London gazette 12-3-1919 with the citation being published in the London gazette 2-12-1919 which stated.
For great courage and devotion to duty on 23rd of October 1918 at Le-Cateau. The battery position was in the area upon which the enemy put down his protective barrage as soon as our attack started, and in consequence was under heavy fire during the whole of the Bombardment. With the exception of himself the whole of the left section became casualties within the first five minutes. He showed exceptional coolness in getting away the wounded. He then returned to his gun and continued loading and firing until it was necessary to detail him to assist in one of the other detachments.
He continued to serve after both of his awards and was finally discharged 7-8-1919 whilst living at 2 Baildon Street, Sheffield.
