Charles Lewis was born in Littlehampton, Devon & was educated at Devon County school & St Catherine's college Oxford where he gained his B.A. He was one of the assistant masters at Wem Grammar school on the outbreak of war & enlisted in to the 10th service battalion of the Devon regiment. He served in Salonica with the battalion before returning to the UK to take up a commission in the 16th service battalion of the Manchester Regiment / Manchester Pals 18-9-1917. He embarked for France 18-12-1917 & sadly killed in action at St Quentin 21-3-1918 on the first day of the March offensive during the battalions gallant last stand at Manchester Hill. Where the battalion fought to the last man & Colonel Elstob lay dead with most of his battalion around him. He had said that the Manchester's would defend Manchester Hill to the last & sadly that was to be the case. Colonel Elstob was later awarded the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross for his actions on that day.
