Richard Walmsley was born in London 21-11-1890 & was the son of John Walmsley, Esquire of the hall, Ince, Lancashire & the ancestorial family home of Luckham park, Chippenham, Wiltshire & the late grandson of Colonel B.B.Haworth-Booth of Hawkorth hall, Hull & Rolston hall, Hornsea, East Yorkshire. He was educated at Eton college & Magdelene College, Cambridge. He was commissioned in to the Green Howards in August 1910 & first arrived in France with his battalion 6-10-1914. He was killed in action in France & Flanders 21-10-1914 at the first battle of Ypres & was the first officer of the regiment to be killed in action in WW1.He was 23 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Aeroplane cemetery, Ypres. He was a noted huntsman prior to the outbreak of war & was the master of the Cambridgeshire Harriers & hunted with the Quarn Belvoir & Cottesmore Hunts.
