Charles Francis Ward was educated at Aysgarth School & at Marlborough college. After attending the R.M.A at Sandhurst he was commissioned in to the Royal Horse Artillery in 1903. He was appointed Captain 30-10-1914 and first landed in France 11-11-1914. He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 15-5-1915 serving with the 75th battery of the R.F.A. He was 31 years of age at the time of his death & is commemorated on the Menin gate memorial at Ypres. The CWGC state that he was the late son of Charles Ward F.R.C.S of Pietermaritzburg , South Africa & the late husband of Majorie ward of Old Hill House, Westerham, Kent. He has good lengthy entry in the bond of sacrifice and the Marlborough college register.
