Herbert Graham enlisted in Sheffield in to the K.O.Y.L.I 7-3-1939 & Served with the K.O.Y.L.I until transferring to the Lincolnshire regiment in May 1942. He finished his war serving with the Royal West Kent Regiment and was discharged to the reserve in 1948. He was recalled for service in Korea with the 1st battalion of the Gloucester regiment in August 1950. He had a very interesting time in Korea and was captured at the battle of Imjin 22nd to 25th of April 1951. He escaped from captivity no less than three times but was recaptured on every occasion. he was part of 20 men from the assault pioneer patrol who escaped from the south side of Gloucester Hill. When captured he was initially held with Major Farrar-Hockley and two other men but made such a nuisance of himself that a North Korean General allow him and two other men safe passage back to the British Lines. This is very well documented in Colonel Harding's Imjin roll and the whole of chapter three of the book is about the three Gloucesters who came back.
