Ernest Albert Cooper was born in Bengal on 1 April 1867 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment on 26 July 1883, serving with the 2nd Battalion in the Burma campaign. He transferred to the Corps of Military Staff Clerks in 1892, transferring to the Army Pay Corps on its formation on 1 April 1893, and was advanced Staff Quartermaster Sergeant prior to 1906. he was discharged to pension as a Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 27 February 1914, after 30 years and 217 days’ service.

Cooper was subsequently commissioned Quartermaster and Honorary Lieutenant in the 14th (Service) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment on 26 December 1914, and served with the 11th (Service) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 2 December 1915. Subsequently serving in Italy from 14 November 1917, he was promoted Captain on 26 December 1917, and for his services he was both Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Military Cross, the latter ‘for bravery in conveying ammunition &c. to the trenches under heavy shell fire.’ He relinquished his commission on 1 September 1919, and was awarded his Meritorious Service Medal per Army Order 18 of 1947. He died in Exeter on 21 June 1950.
