Sam Benjamin Farrant initially enlisted in to the K.O.Y.L.I but transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps before his arrival in France 25-8-1915. He went on to transfer to the East Lancashire Regiment with service number 23827 before being commissioned in to the 10th service battalion of the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment in 1917.
He was awarded the MC in the London gazette 2-4-1919 for services in Italy and the citation was published in the London gazette 10-12-1919.
The citation states.
On the 27th October 1918 during the operations to cross the Piave he led his platoon with marked courage , often under the heaviest machine gun fire & shelling. With only one man he dashed into enemy regimental headquarters & captured the regimental commander & his staff of twelve other officers, besides many men in the neighborhood of the building. During an enemy counter attack delivered later he very skillfully organised our defensive position and was largely instrumental in keeping the ground gained held. His gallantry and disregard of personal danger were an inspiration to his men.
He applied for the issue of his campaign medals in 1921 whilst living at 36 Smawthorne Grove, Castleford, West Yorkshire.
