John Richard Thompson was a 22 year old farmer from Bellingham, Northumberland when he enlisted in to the volunteer service company of the Northumberland Fusiliers in January 1900. He served in South Africa between 24-2-1900 & 19-5-1901 when he returned home & took his discharge 27-5-1901.
