The recipient was a resident of Aberdeen & wounded at Elandslaagte 21-10-1899 serving with the 1st battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. He received a severe gunshot wound to the thigh and is actually recorded on one casualty roll as having been killed in action at Elandslaagte 20-10-1899. This is incorrect & he was actually discharged from the army in 1904.
