The recipient was taken prisoner of war at Swalkrant 4-6-1900 serving with the 1st battalion of the Highland Light Infantry & had previously been mentioned in despatches in a despatch by lord Methuen dated 15-2-1900 & published in the London gazette 16-3-1900. The despatch states that the recipient set a good example to his comrades.
