The recipient was a resident of Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester & was a long serving member of the 7th Manchester Regiment. He originally enlisted in to the 16th service battalion of the Manchester Regiment 2-9-1914 but never served overseas with this unit. He first served overseas with the 8th battalion of the Royal Lancaster Regiment & was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 12-5-1917 & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Arras memorial. He was 39 years of at the time of his death & is listed in the Manchester city battalions book of honour & is in one of the photographic images in the book.
