1) 1914-15 Trio
To- 18-89.PTE.J.TATE.W.YORK.R
Joseph Tate was one of the first men to enlist in to the 18th service battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment / 2nd Bradford Pals. He was both born & enlisted in Bradford & first landed in Egypt with the battalion 22-12-1915. He was one of a small party of men who were sent out on a fighting patrol on the 30th of June 1916 with a view to inspect the German wire & trenches prior to the big push on the first day of the Somme 1-7-1916. He was mortally wounded during the patrol & sadly died of his wounds 30-6-1916. This patrol is very well documented in all the published works on the Bradford pals & casualties for the patrol are much harder to find than casualties on the first day of the Somme. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Bertrancourt military cemetery.
