George Henry Hatchley was born in Seaton 23-12-1866 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy as a boy 27-3-1883. He served onboard HMS Cossack during the Witu campaign of 1890 & was one of only 110 recipients of the medal & clasp to this ship. He went on to serve on land with the Naval brigade from HMS Widgeon during the Boer war of 1899-1902 & was one of only 71 recipients of the Natal clasp to that ship. He was awarded his RN LS&GC in 1901 whilst serving at HMS Vivid & was pensioned to shore in December of 1904. He joined the RFR in January 1905 & was recalled for service in the great war. He served onboard armed merchant cruisers before finally being discharged 9-5-1917 with an injury to his left eye & was awarded a silver war badge.
