Joseph Henry Southwell was born in Maryport 20-8-1891 and enlisted in to the Tyne Division of the R.N.V.R 12-11-1914. He went on to serve on Gallipoli with the Nelson battalion of the Royal Naval Division. He received a shrapnel wound to his right thigh & left hand on Gallipoli 13-7-1915 and sadly died of his wounds the following day 14-7-1915. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Helles memorial & his next of kin is recorded as his father Joseph Southwell of 29 Fleming street, Maryport, Cumberland.
