George.W.Hanson from Sheffield first landed in France serving with the 42nd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery 19-8-1914 and his entitlement to the August to November 1914 clasp is confirmed on his MIC. He was mentioned in despatches for services in France in the London gazette dated 15-6-1916 & again 11-12-1917. He went on to be awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal in the London gazette 4-3-1918 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty when the battery waggon lines were heavily bombed , causing casualties to men & horses. He displayed great courage in organising the removal of the wounded & in getting the horses away to a flank while continual bombing was going on. He applied for the issue of his 1914 clasp in January 1920 whilst living at 62 Brunswick Road, Pitsmoor, Sheffield.
