John William Kendell from Silksworth, Sunderland enlisted in 1881 & first landed in France 16-8-1914 serving with the Royal Field Artillery. He was awarded the immediate M.S.M in the London gazette 3-3-1919 for services in Mesopotamia & was also twice M.I.D for services in Mesopotamia in the London gazette 12-3-1918 & 27-8-1918. He then went on to transfer to the Supply & Transport corps for service in India, Kurdistan & Iraq. He was awarded his LS&GC whilst serving with the Indian unattached list & his last entry in the army list is dated 1924.
Sadly the recipients 1914 star & Victory medal are missing from the group.

John William Kendell was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire on the 6th January 1881 and enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery on 6th February 1900 for 12 years (7 with the colours and 5 on reserve) aged 19 years 1 month.

He married Louisa Ann Gray on 10th January, 1907 at Silkworth, Durham, England

Served in UK then India 1908 – 14 & first landed in France 16-8-1914 serving with the Royal Field Artillery and then to Mesopotamia in 1915.

He was awarded the immediate M.S.M in the London gazette 3-3-1919 for services in Mesopotamia & went on to transfer to the Supply & Transport corps for service in India, Kurdistan & Iraq.

He was awarded his LS&GC whilst serving with the Indian Unattached List

He was specially promoted a supernumerary Sub-conductor with the Supply and Transport Corps, Indian Army on 17/10/1919 for services during the war.

List as Supernumerary to “C“ Supply Depot Company, S. & T. C. in the July 1921, April 1922 & January 1923 Indian Army Lists and also notes that he was specially promoted a sub conductor under paragraph 470, A. R., I, volume 2 for services during the war.

470. Departmental officers with honorary rank, warrant, and N. C. O’s. may be specially promoted for good service in the field, or for distinguished service of an exceptional nature not in the field ; when so promoted they will be borne as supernumeraries in their new grades until absorbed by promotion in the ordinary course. In both branches of the I. S. M. D., those specially promoted are eligible for further promotion to the top of the warrant or commissioned grades, as the case may be, according to their new seniority. No promotions can be made in the room of those specially promoted.



Formally transferred to Supply & Transport Corps on 25th March 1922. With the new army No. 1038286

In August 1922 he sailed from Bombay on the P&O ship ‘Kaiser-i-Hind’ to Tibury. He is listed as Sub-Conductor. He is accompanied by wife and two daughters. Their proposed address is 36 Robert Street, Silksworth, Durham.

In 1939 he is listed as being a pensioned Warrant Officer 1st Class and a clerk in the Ministry of Labour. Living at 1 Edwin Street, Houghton-Le-Spring, Durham.

In January 1940 this house was listed for sale (five rooms, scullery with bath, gas and electricity. Vacant possession)

He died April 24 1943 at Twyford Lodge, Willesdon, Middlesex but his home address was 78 Julian Avenue, Acton, Middlesex. Cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis.
