Samuel Thomas Wallis was born 1-5-1880 & was the son of a Royal Marine Drummer stationed in Plymouth. He enlisted in to the Royal Marines 7-3-1899 & in 1900 when sent to China during the boxer rebellion. He remained in China until 1903 when he returned to the UK. He was awarded his LS&GC 4-5-1914 & was posted to HMS illustrious on the outbreak of war. On the 7th of December 1915 he was posted to HMS Vengence for service in East Africa. He was one of 70 men from HMS Vengence to serve under Colonel Phillips in East Africa & Sgt wallis served as acting QM.SGT to the expedition. He remained with the force until March 1918 when he returned to the UK & was discharged to a pension in 1920 & returned home to live with his father in Plymouth. Where he passed away in 1943.
