John Armitage Hartley was the son of Lieutenant Colonel J.E.Hartley of Reigate Surrey & was one of the directors of Hartley & Sugden boilermakers of Halifax. He was the former battalion commander and sadly died of wounds due to poison gas 19-12-1915 age 21. He was educated at Oundle school and was given a commission on the outbreak of war. He was working at his fathers firm in Halifax at the time as his father had retired to Surrey. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery near Ypres.
