Robert Leech first served overseas with the 7th battalion of the Border Regiment with service number 17699. He transferred to the 16th service battalion of the Manchester Regiment (1st City Pals Btn) & is recorded as having being admitted to the Southern general hospital at Portsmouth 8-8-1917 due to rifle bullet wounds to his left arm. He was awarded the DCM in the London gazette 15-6-1917 for his services at the battle of Henin 27-4-1917 with the following citation.
For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty & in spite of heavy hostile fire. He captured an important enemy post & maintained his position for 48 hours until he was relieved.
One of only 10 DCM's awarded to this battalion in WW1.
