Charles Robert Childs was born in Newhaven, Sussex in 1878 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy in 1894. He served onboard HMS Terrible during the Boer War & 1900 Boxer rebellion in China & was part of the shore party that went onshore in Natal Province. He joined HMS Hawke in 1913 & was serving onboard when she was sunk by U9 in the North Sea 15-10-1914. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial & has a short entry in De Ruvigny's roll of honour.
